What alternatives can be used in place of health in a game?

I was thinking the other day about health systems, and how nearly every game has one or a lives system. But what could be an alternative to this? Don’t Starve has sanity, Fear Effect has fear, but the only work with certain games, as fear and sanity wouldn’t fit many games. What are some alternatives to the generic health system?
